WHAT IS A JOURNAL CLUB?

A journal club is an educational meeting in which a group of individuals discuss current peer-reviewed journal articles, providing assistance to each other in keeping up with the literature. A journal club can raise issues and questions related to real situations that nurses deal with daily. A journal club serves as a bridge between research and practice; it fosters the application of research to the clinical setting.

It is virtually impossible to keep up to date by reading journals on an individual basis, so journal clubs keep members informed about current literature, especially research-based articles.
How is research relevant to RNs in different settings, such as the bedside clinician? In the early 90’s, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses conducted the Thunder Study, a multi-center research study which looked at the need for heparin to keep high pressure lines such as arterial lines patent.

Ten thousand patients later, we learned we didn’t need to put heparin in the lines, saving the patient exposure to an unnecessary medication.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
Do you know what the current literature says about feeding tubes? Decubitus treatment? Diabetes? Have you ever had a question about a nursing practice and the only answer was “We’ve always done it this way”?

1. Keep up with current literature
2. Learn about new trends & issues
3. Learn to critique and appraise research
4. Find out if what you believe is backed up by evidence
5. Develop an evidence-based practice
6. Participate in an activity that is the hallmark of professionalism
7. Improve patient outcomes

MEMBERSHIP IN THE JOURNAL CLUB
Any nurse in any department can become a member of the Journal Club. All you have to have is a desire to learn in this open and informal format.
The articles will be emailed out prior to each Journal Club meeting. These articles should be read PRIOR to the meeting, so that you can discuss them during the meeting.
